Muir Marker in Indiana Soon to Be Reality

As we went to press, the Hoosier Chapter was preparing to erect an Indiana Historical Marker in downtown Indianapolis to honor Sierra Club founder John Muir.

The "John Muir in Indiana" marker will be located at the intersection of South Illinois and Merrill Streets, between South Street and Pogues Run (behind the main post office).

Most Hoosiers do not know that John Muir lived in Indianapolis over 100 years ago and worked at the Osgood, Smith & Company factory as a machinist/inventor. An accident at the factory blinded Muir in his right eye, and his left eye went dark in sympathetic reaction. During his recuperation, Muir decided to devote his life to the environment.

The chapter is still raising funds to pay for the marker. If you wish to donate to the John Muir Historical Marker Fund, please send your contribution to the Hoosier Chapter.
