Join Legislative Efforts

By John Ulmer, Chapter Conservation Chair

The next session of the Indiana legislature is not far away. No doubt, taxes, budget, and the politics of the next election will take center stage.

It is important that we don't let environmental issues remain in the wings or fall off the stage completely. We need to educate the public on wetlands, on the health effects of our current air and water, and on poorly run Confined Animal Feeding Operations. More importantly, we must educate our legislators on these issues and the fact that the public cares.

We need your help. If you are a member of a Sierra Club group, please think about what you can do to help the group engage your legislators in this important dialogue. If there is not a group in your area, we still need your help in this effort. Regardless, please consider becoming part of the chapter legislative committee. Your ideas and experience can be invaluable in our statewide effort.

If you can help, please contact the chapter office at sierra@netdirect.net. Considering the governor's veto of particularly bad environmental bills, it's possible that bad legislation could be enacted with little notice to the public. This is a critical time for the Indiana's environmental future. Please consider what you can do.
