Michiana Committee Events

By Hazel Stevens, Michiana Committee

The Michiana Committee of the Sierra Club now holds its regular meetings at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the Res Nature Center, 13950 Scout Lane, in Mishawaka.

Jane Fuller, Hoosier Chapter outings chair, spoke at a meeting this summer. Her training, information, and materials covered the basics of how to lead Sierra Club outings that are safe, make people happy, and leave them feeling inspired to enjoy, protect, and preserve our natural places. At the end of Jane's presentation, many attendees indicated their willingness to lead Sierra Club outings.

The Michiana Committee had a beautiful and lively canoe outing on the St. Joseph River. The group met at St. Patrick's County Park in South Bend and enjoyed a 3-4 hour trip down the river to the Niles Dam. The outing was great fun (one participant brought a water cannon!), and we learned a lot about paddling techniques while appreciating the river and the lush flora and fauna along its banks.

Participants were (from left to right, standing) Geza Csapo, Dave Fisher, Charlie Day, Chuck Rupley,
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Mayernick, Dave Norris, Jay Stevens, Dawn Kessler, Jude Keltner, Dale Keltner,
(from left to right, sitting) Richard Mah, Kerry Gilmore, Seth (nephew of the Kesslers),
Beth Miller, Hazel Stevens, Gary Grossman, and Jeff Kessler.

Four members of Michiana Committee attended the quarterly chapter outings committee meeting at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Camping, meeting Sierra Club members from around the state, and visiting Pinhook Bog with a park ranger were highlights of the trip.

At another meeting, the Michiana Committee hosted two special guests. One was Lori Hazlett from the Hoosier Chapter office in Indianapolis, who came to facilitate completion of Michiana bylaws. The other was Bob Carrico, Sierra Club member and Pumpkinvine Trail Association board member. Bob presented a program on the trail that is being developed along the former railroad corridor between Goshen, Middlebury, and Shipshewana.

The Michiana Committee members and friends had the opportunity to walk and bike portions of the Pumpkinvine. It was a wonderful way to appreciate the 10-year effort that volunteers have put in to save this land. Their perseverance is a good lesson for all of us!

Finally, the Michiana Committee hosted a program on the EnviroCorps, an organization that serves such a vital service and yet has been the subject of drastic budget cuts.
