Your Input Needed on Upcoming Legislative Issues

The state budget will be the major focus of the 2003 legislative session. However, many environmental issues are at hand.

The Hoosier Chapterís major areas of legislative environmental focus are as follows. (See the adjacent story on the 2003 legislative session for further explanation of these points.)

  1. Wetlands
  2. State Revolving (Loan) Fund
  3. Permit fee increases
  4. Stream low-flow policy establishment
  5. Clean Water Indiana (funding)
  6. We will also watch and testify on other bills, such as monitoring of air hazardous chemicals, lead, pesticides in schools, deer farms, and funds for Heritage Trust.

To be effective on legislative issues, we need your input and your help. Please join us at the legislative committee meetings at 7 p.m., the second Monday of each month, at the new chapter office near downtown Indianapolis. December is an exception; we will meet on Thursday, Dec. 19.

If you canít be there in person, we will have a call-in number. Contact Lori Hazlett at the chapter office ahead of time for the number. Lori can be reached at sierra@netdirect.net or (317) 822-3750.

Also, please contact Lori if you are willing to call, write, or visit your state legislator. This will be critical in our work because legislators are most responsive to voters in their districts. We will give you all the information needed.

Our lobbyist Laura Arnold and others are available to attend Sierra Club group meetings to review the issues and help train members in working with their legislators. Laura can be reached at larnold@indy.rr.com or (317) 635-0112.

Your legislative questions or comments can go to Laura or to Glenn Pratt, the legislative committee chair, at pratt@netdirect.net or (317) 253-7061. If you are in a local Sierra Club group, you can also contact your group legislative coordinator.
