Clean Water Plans: Probably Not Coming to a Stream Near You

by Sandy Miles

Indiana has listed 208 of its streams and rivers as polluted. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s (IDEM) own schedule calls for completing cleanup plans for 16 of those rivers and streams by the end of 2001.

As of last month, IDEM had not said how many, if any, of those targeted waterways’ plans will be budgeted for completion in 2001. The Sierra Club suggests that unless no budget at all is expected, IDEM could commit to begin the next cleanup plan on the list.

Thus far IDEM has submitted only one cleanup plan to the EPA (in December 2000). The Sierra Club objected to that plan (for Kokomo Creek) as seriously deficient.

Since the start of 2001, chapter representatives have contacted IDEM monthly seeking the names of stream segments for which cleanup plans will be written during the year.

The response has been that the agency cannot determine which ones will be written, not even the first, until after its budget is finalized in July.

Here is IDEM’s list of impaired waterways scheduled to have cleanup plans complete by the end of 2001. If a stream near you is listed, contact the chapter office for our latest information from IDEM on whether it has decided to write any cleanup plans for this year.

Waterways listed for cleanup plans by December (none has yet been budgeted for completion):

  • Little Wildcat Creek, Kokomo
  • Prairie Creek Ditch, Kokomo
  • South Fork Wildcat Creek, Frankfort
  • Wildcat Creek, Kokomo
  • Fall Creek, Indianapolis
  • Pleasant Run, Indianapolis
  • Cobb Creek, Hebron
  • Kankakee River, Lake/LaPorte counties
  • Pine Creek, North Judson
  • Unnamed Ditch, Wyatt
